Description:
This book begins with a lesson on the nature of astronomy, and then it covers the major structures of our solar system. Starting with the sun and working towards Pluto, the student will learn details about all nine planets (or is it eight? - your student will have to decide) in the solar system. Along the way, the student will also learn about earth’s moon, the asteroid belt, and the Kuiper belt. After that, the student will move outside our solar system and learn about the stars and galaxies that make up God’s incredible universe. Finally, the student will learn about space travel and what it takes to be an astronaut!
The activities and projects use easy-to-find household items and truly make the lessons come alive! They include making a solar eclipse, making craters like those found on Mercury, simulating the use of radar to determine hidden landscape, keeping track of the phases of the moon, making a telescope, making fog, and making an astrometer to measure the brightness of a star. We recommend that you spend the entire school year covering this book, devoting approximately two sessions per week to the
course.
This wonderful book uses the classical and Charlotte Mason methodology to give elementary school students an introduction to our solar system and the universe that contains it. Narration and notebooking are used to encourage critical thinking, logical ordering, retention, and record keeping. Each lesson in the book is organized with a narrative, some notebook work, an activity, and a project.
Reviews From Parents
I just wanted to let you know how much my family and I appreciate [Exploring Creation With Astronomy]. We have
a separate science curriculum for my kids (5th and 1st grade) and we read a
chapter from your book as it coincides with our other assignments. We all
enjoy the conversational style my daughter describes it as "nice casual." You
are able to keep things light and interesting without patronizing. I enjoy
learning right along with my kids. Best of all, my children remember things.
They tell their dad over the dinner table about details from what we'd read in
your book.
Thanks for the effort to put together a creation-centered, high-quality
publication. We appreciate it and look forward to using more of your books in
the future.
I'm the host and executive producer of By the Book Radio, a weekly
internet program for Christian living. I'm also a homeschooling mom, and just
completed a study with my 9-year-old son on astronomy using your
wonderful curriculum! It is by far the best science book out there for his age
group, especially since he's advanced in science. He loved it and couldn't get
enough!
We started using Jeannie's Astronomy book this year after the book was
discussed on the Note-booking yahoo group this past summer. As soon as I heard
about it, I ordered it right away, and I must say it's our favorite subject
this year! We are absolutely loving, loving, loving science!! Thank you so
much Jeannie, for writing this book, and Thank You Lord for giving Jeannie the
gifts to write it and get it published!
I actually got teary-eyed when I was reading aloud the part in the Sun
chapter where Isaiah 60:19 was quoted. The section is called "God's Light
Shines Brighter". That was awesome!
I just learned about this group today and I'm very excited about it.
Can't wait to read through the archives! We started Lesson 5 this week, the
Earth. Thanks for letting me a part of your group!
My 6 and 7 year old boys will begin your astronomy course on August 23rd. We
are so excited about this. We are astronomy buffs and own a 10" telescope. I
had been praying for an appropriate astronomy course for my boys because this
is an area of intense interest to them. Your new curriculum answered my
prayers. Our four old son walks around carrying the textbook ("the space book"
- as he calls it) and wants me to read out loud from it everyday.
