Description:

This wonderful book uses the classical and Charlotte Mason methodology to give elementary school students an introduction to God’s incredible world of plants. Narration and notebooking are used to encourage critical thinking, logical ordering, retention, and record keeping. Each lesson in the book is organized with a narrative, some notebook work, an activity, and a project. The activities and projects use easy-to-find household items and truly make the lessons come alive! They include making a "light hut" in which to grow plants, dissection of a bean seed, growing seeds in plastic bags to watch the germination process, making a leaf skeleton, observing how plants grow towards light, measuring transpiration, forcing bulbs to grow out of season, and forcing pine cones to open and close.

This book begins with a lesson on the nature of botany and the process of classifying plants. It then discusses the development of plants from seeds, the reproduction processes in plants, the way plants make their food, and how plants get their water and nutrients and distribute them throughout the body of the plant. As students study these topics, they also learn about many different kinds of plants in Creation and where these plants belong in the plant classification system.

Although designed to be read by the parent to elementary students of various grade levels, it is possible for students with a 4th-grade reading level to read this book on their own. Grades K-6.

Reviews From Parents

I simply LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this curriculum. I have been homeschooling for 12 years and have tried countless science curriculums for elementary...all have fallen short of my expectations as well as my children's enjoyment. It is so sad to see a child get excited about science at the beginning of a school year only to have them tell you how much they hate it a few weeks later. Not anymore, my children have begged to do science, even gone ahead and worked by themselves, because they WANT to do it. (My high schooler is jealous, he wants to know why his brothers get the "Good stuff" and he had to use those boring books. Thank you
I received our new botany book on Tuesday. I must say we already love it. My son begs to do just science every day. We're working out way through the first chapter. Tomorrow should finish it up for us (I took three days - took it nice & slow). Now he is VERY impatient to make the light hut! Guess what we'll be > doing tomorrow! :-) The best part of all this rambling.... We went on a walk today & he kept finding all kinds of moss, lichen, buds...he had a great time. He brought his digital camera & took photos that will be added to his notebook. Then later while he was outside playing, he kept bringing me "treasures" for his notebook – a small twig with licen on it, more buds.... Very cool! We love this book! Thanks so much Jeannine! We also loved the astronomy one, but I plan to do more of the hands-on stuff & make more of a notebook this time. Woo-Hoo! enough!
We started our Botany last week and my son LOVES it! I know this is going to be a big hit. He usually doesn't remember terms, but he remembered everything and could explain it all with no trouble. When I brought out the Botany book, he settled down beside me, with a sparkle in his eyes. Thanks, Jeannie, from the bottom of my heart, for this great curriculum!
